Virtual Air Traffic System Simulation VATSS

Boost-Fund-Project on interdisciplinary air traffic system simulation, funded Boost Fund Project in the RWTH Aachen University Excellence Initiative.

Motivation

A need for simulation and display of the air traffic system as decision support can be identified in three areas:

  • Fundamental and applied research on transport system, vehicle design and traffic control
  • Commercial applications such as airport planning, trajectory definition and eco-efficient airline operations
  • Demonstrating the impact of air traffic in administrative procedures to non-experts e.g. in hearings on noise and emissions, airport planning procedures and pollution control

VATSS Approach

Interdisciplinary simulation of air traffic in the vicinity of airports by iteratively coupled models for environment, aircraft movements and environmental impact. The simulation data is explored via a visualisation and auralisation concept by means of virtual reality (VR).

⇒ Along with conventional metrics a virtual explorable scenario is available ⇒ The complex nature of air traffic scenarios of becomes accessible to researchers and laymen

Multidisciplinary approach

Successful Collaboration of five institutes from five faculties on air traffic simulation:

  • Aerospace (ILR, FB4) – aircraft simulation
  • Virtual Reality Group (VRG, FB1) – 3-D visualisation of simulation results
  • Climatology Group (Geo, FB5) – atmosphere model and emission propagation
  • Airport and Air Transportation Research (VIA, FB3) – Airport operations and ATC
  • Technical Acoustics (ITA, FB6) – Noise propagation and auralisation

Expert knowledge for the integral investigation of air traffic systems with infrastructure, emissions, environmental impact, noise etc. is brought toghether from all faculties of the RWTH Aachen University.

Outlook

  • In collaborations and and joined research projects of industry and research institutions, a technology of high value may be developed
  • Application of the technology as a tool towards intuitive understanding of complex relations for the environmentally friendly shaping of the air traffic of tomorrow.
